시드니 셸던

미국 소설가 시드니 셸던이 사망했습니다. 셸던 작품들의 문학성에 대해선 뭐라 말할 수 없겠습니다만, 적어도 그 소설들이 무지무지 재미있었다는 것에는, 한권이라도 읽어본 독자라면 동의를 하지 않을까요.

예전에 이모가 셸던 소설을 많이 갖고있어서 집으로 가져다가 보곤 했었는데요. `천사의 분노', `게임의 여왕', '한 밤의 저편', '신들의 풍차' 이런 소설들 참 얼마나 열심히, 많이도 읽었는지. '깊은 밤 깊은 곳에'라는 영화로 만들어졌던 '한밤의 저편'을 비롯해, 팜프 파탈 분야에서라면 셀던을 따라갈 사람이 과연 있었을까요. 

 

어제 셸던이 세상을 떴다는 소식을 외신으로 보면서 마음 한구석이 참 섭섭했습니다. 예를 들면 최근 몇년 새 세상을 떠난 이들, 잘 알지도 못하지만 어쨌든 경외의 마음을 품고 있는 에드워드 사이드라든가 수전 손택, 야세르 아라파트, 피터 드러커 같은 이들의 타계 소식과는 좀 다른 느낌입니다면 적어도 셸던의 사망 소식에 어떤 '느낌'을 받게 되는 것은 어찌 보면 당연한 일인 것 같아요.

 

`화려하고도 저급한 베스트셀러의 대가(master), 세상을 떠나다.'

미국 일간지 LA타임스는 31일 베스트셀러 작가 시드니 셀던(사진)의 죽음을 이렇게 추모했다. 수년간 폐렴 합병증에 시달리던 셀던은 30일 캘리포니아주 랜초미라지의 아이젠하워 병원에서 부인과 딸이 지켜보는 가운데 숨을 거뒀다. 89세. 한 시대를 풍미한 작가를 떠나보내면서 미국 언론들은 `통속적'이라고 평가받는 작품 뒤에 감춰진 그의 치열한 삶과 작가정신을 조명했다.

셀던은 `평단에게는 극한의 미움을, 팬들에게는 열화와 같은 사랑을' 받은 작가였다. 1970년 발표된 데뷔작 `벌거벗은 얼굴(The Naked Face)'은 평단의 혹독한 질타 속에서도 310만부가 판매되며 뉴욕타임스가 선정한 `올해의 최우수 추리소설'로 뽑혔다. 공전의 히트작인 1974년 `깊은 밤의 저편(The Other Side of Midnight)'도 "대사는 진부하고, 내용은 현실과 동떨어졌다"는 혹평을 들어야 했다. 

그러나 대중들은 그의 소설이 가진 매력적인 주인공들과 책장을 덮을 수 없게 만드는 복잡하면서도 이해하기 쉬운 플롯에 열광했다. `천사의 분노(Rage of Angels)', `게임의 여왕(Master of the Game)', `내일이 오면(If Tomorrow Comes)' 등으로 이어지는 그의 작품들은 세계 180여개국에서 번역돼 3억만부 이상 팔렸다. 파키스탄 우르두어, 인도어, 스와힐리어 등 51개 언어로 번역되면서 `가장 많은 언어로 작품을 출간한 작가'로 기네스북에 이름을 올리기도 했다.

그는 생전에 "나는 평론가들을 위해서가 아니라 독자를 위해서 쓴다"는 말을 인터뷰마다 되풀이했으며 그의 작품에 비판적이었던 워싱턴포스트도 결국 "되풀이해 읽게 만드는 품질좋은 정크(쓰레기)소설"이라고 그의 작품이 가진 힘을 인정했다. 

셀던은 또 치밀한 `취재'를 통해 작품을 구성한 것으로도 유명하다. 냉전 시절인 1987년작 `신들의 풍차'는 미국 캔자스의 여성 대학교수가 루마니아 대사로 임명돼 활동하는 과정에서 벌어진 살인사건과 음모를 다루고 있다. 이 소설을 쓰기 위해 셀던은 전직 미 중앙정보국(CIA) 국장 리처드 헬름스를 인터뷰하고 루마니아, 아르헨티나 등을 돌아다니며 정보를 모은 것으로 알려져 화제가 되기도 했다.

셀던의 삶 역시 그가 만들어낸 이야기들 못지 않게 파란만장했다. "내 아버지는 평생 책을 한권도 읽지 않았고, 나는 우리집에서 유일하게 고등학교를 졸업한 사람"이라고 회상했을 정도로 지독하게 가난한 집안에서 태어난 그는 노스웨스턴대학에 진학했으나 경제적 부담으로 결국 학교를 중퇴했다. 스무살부터 할리우드의 영화 스튜디오를 전전하며 대본을 썼고 뮤지컬, TV 방송작가 등으로도 활동하며 토니상과 에미상 등을 수상했다. 

그러나 그가 가장 사랑한 것은 50세가 넘어서 시작한 소설작업이었다. 시드니 셀던은 지난 2000년 영국 일간지 더 타임스와의 인터뷰에서 "책 속에서는 상상력이 무한대로 뻣어갈 수 있다. 예산을 걱정할 필요도 없고, 셀수 없이 많은 사람들 내 맘대로 등장시킬 수도 있다"면서 소설에 대한 지극한 애정을 털어놓기도 했다.

Sidney Sheldon, Novelist, Dies at 89 

Sidney Sheldon had a prolific and award-winning career writing for theater, movies and television, but he often proclaimed his greatest love for another creative outlet. "Writing novels is the most fun I've ever had," Sheldon once said. The best-selling author died Tuesday at 89 at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage of complications from pneumonia. His wife, Alexandra, was by his side. 

"I try to write my books so the reader can't put them down," Sheldon explained in a 1982 interview. 
"I try to construct them so when the reader gets to the end of a chapter, he or she has to read just one more chapter. It's the technique of the old Saturday afternoon serial: Leave the guy hanging on the edge of the cliff at the end of the chapter." 

Sheldon mostly wrote about stalwart women who triumph in a hostile world of ruthless men. His notable novels included "Rage of Angels," "The Other Side of Midnight," and "If Tomorrow Comes." 
"I like to write about women who are talented and capable, but most important, retain their femininity," he said. "Women have tremendous power -- their femininity, because men can't do without it." 

Several of his novels became television miniseries, often with the author as producer. Sheldon began writing as a youngster in Chicago, where he was born Feb. 11, 1917. At 10, he sold a poem for $10. During the Depression, he worked at a variety of jobs, attended Northwestern University and contributed short plays to drama groups. At 17, he tried his luck in Hollywood as a reader of prospective film material at Universal Studio for $22 a week. At night, he wrote his own screenplays and sold one, "South of Panama," to the studio for $250. 

During World War II, Sheldon served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. After the war, he established his reputation as a prolific writer in the New York theater. At one time, he had three musicals on Broadway: a rewritten "The Merry Widow," "Jackpot" and "Dream with Music." He received a Tony award as one of the writers of the Gwen Verdon hit "Redhead." 

His Broadway success ushered his return to Hollywood, where his first assignment, "The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer," starring Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Shirley Temple, won him an Academy Award for best original screenplay of 1947. 

When the movie industry began to feel the pinch of television's popularity, Sheldon decided to try the new medium. "I suppose I needed money," he remembered. "I met Patty Duke one day at lunch. So I produced `The Patty Duke Show,' and I did something nobody else in TV ever did. For seven years, I wrote almost every single episode of the series." 

He also created and produced "I Dream of Jeannie," which lasted five seasons in the late 1960s. During the last year of "I Dream of Jeannie," he decided to write a novel, he said in 1982. His first work, "The Naked Face," was scorned by book reviewers and sold 21,000 copies in hardcover. The novel found a mass market in paperback, however, reportedly selling 3.1 million. 

Thereafter Sheldon became a habitue of best-seller lists. He prided himself in the authenticity of his novels. 
He remarked in 1987: "If I write about a place, I have been there. If I write about a meal in Indonesia, I have eaten there in that restaurant. I don't think you can fool the reader." 

For "Windmills of the Gods," which dealt with the CIA, he interviewed former CIA chief Richard Helms, traveled to Argentina and Romania and spent a week in Junction City, Kan., where the heroine had lived. Though he won a Tony, an Oscar and an Emmy (for "I Dream of Jeannie") during his career, Sheldon said he derived the most satisfaction from writing his novels. "I love writing books," he said. "When you do a novel you're on your own. It's a freedom that doesn't exist in any other medium." 

Sheldon was married for more than 30 years to Jorja Curtright Sheldon, a stage and film actress who later became a prominent interior decorator. She died in 1985. He married Alexandra Kostoff, a former child actress and advertising executive, in 1989.
